It happened to be elocution competition for school kids organized by a mosque and they were kind enough to let the world hear. The subject for the kids as young as 8-10 was 'Are women in Islam scuttled of freedom'. I heard the little girl opening up her speech with- We know increasing sexual abuses against women today. One reason is the dress they wear'.

I was startled to hear this and imagine the amount of venom injected into the kids to come up with such a statement.

A few days ago the whole India and even parts of the world woke up rudely to what should be seen as the row over a piece of clothing worn by a particular community. There has been talks, discussions and debates on freedom to wear and eat. But do we see the greater picture? What are we fighting at the end of the day? Is the enemy an individual, a party or a religion?

Liberalization promised to bring us many things. Wealth, prosperity, health education, food and opportunities were some of them. The social evils in our land, including casteism, inequality, superstitions were assumed to be automatically eradicated with the onset of education. But we have seen the social indices plunging especially in India. We see rational thought process disappearing slowly from all walks of life. We have been busy giving life to mythical beings and making a larger than life image out of them.

I remember joining a gym in here and to be welcomed by a larger than life sized image of a loin clad angry Hanuman who seems to have injected a lot of steroids. If we had walked back a few decades, we would have come across less glamorous-more of a monkey version- of Hanuman. The same applies with all religions. The mythical figures have been re-painted to suit the narrative of the privileged. As Marx said once religion is being used as a legalized opium to hide from the masses that they are being tortured and abused.

Jonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02353132118227776294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097295319906609428.post-45428628498291488302022-02-08T08:26:00.001-08:002022-02-08T08:26:12.333-08:00Colour of the shirtThe sleaziest pick up line for a middle aged flirt would be 'What are you wearing to Office today'

And that is what I asked her today. decides the moral compass of a man? How far will he go to compromise that
compass to protect the things he values the most? And how does he justify his
actions at the end of the day.

When you
start out the journey of life, good and evil or right and wrong are laid out in
black and white. The border line separating them gets hazy as life goes on and
in the end you learn that the thing that matters most is your survival.

So what
happens when someone standing on the wrong side of your morality is someone you
love? Where will your priorities lie? This seems to be the predicament of Roy,
the protagonist of the movie ‘Aarkkariyaam’ (Translated as Who knows?) Roy, who
himself is going through a tough patch in his business) is startled to learn a
hard truth about his father-in-law. The story moves on from that point to
journey of Roy to reach a point of decision.

Roy is
portrayed as an ordinary businessman caught in hard times of the pandemic. He
uses goodwill of his friend, who cheats his company to arrange temporary funds
for Roy. Roy travels to Kerala along with his wife to her house in Pala and the
story evolves from there. The pace of the story evolves leisurely and smoothly until the story turns on its head
with a sudden twist.

The
characters are unraveled at its own beautiful pace, which is rather unseen in
movies these days. The character of Roy caught in a moral dilemma, when he himself is trying to
salvage the wrongs he has done, his wife moving away from a previous, abusive
relationship and a father seeking a closure in the mysterious will of God’.
Added to all the tensions is the life thrown off the rails thanks to the
pandemic.

The casting
and art work is exemplary. The actors have also done a fabulous work but I
found Biju Menon to be a little laboring in his act as a old man. It is a
matter of contention that our ‘superstars’ are rather reluctant to reinvent
themselves. This role could have been aced by one of them. The success of the
movie in times of pandemic shows that hardwork pays off.

Jonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02353132118227776294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097295319906609428.post-49854073778480680482021-05-05T02:14:00.001-07:002021-05-05T02:14:26.466-07:00A small obituary on Mar Chrysostom

Jonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02353132118227776294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097295319906609428.post-53869975466496078442020-10-24T12:08:00.001-07:002020-10-24T12:08:45.272-07:00The corner office

Guys were all ganged up and high on adrenaline. Their chief objective was to boo down anything and everything moving on the stage. Then the announcement came up for the Dance by Tony. We were surprised. We didn’t know the tall, shy Tony could dance. ‘Dance’ items were reserved for the exclusive gang and here comes Tony. The curtains opened to Tony in a shiny glittering outfit. He started swaying his body like a Snake and I was impressed. Sadly the silence turned to boos in a few minutes. In the next few days the discussion in the college was on how he managed to show the guts. I realized the Boos came not because the dance was bad, rather he had the guts to do a ‘feminine’ dance routine. Years later, I read in a news media that he became one of the Malayali IT professional to come out in the open and profess his homosexuality.

We, as Malayali breed, is a proud lot. We have to be cajoled to get in front of a mic or speak in a gathering or shake a leg. Still without much hesitation we would judge, find faults, get sarcastic and laugh at anyone in front of the mic.

This ‘shyness’ reflects in every walk of life- social, political, economic, arts and even family. Rather than defining it as ‘shy’ I would rather say our society has set some rigid guidelines or framework on how people have to react and behave to various scenarios and platforms. Anything outside the guidelines are considered ‘different’, ‘rebel’, or even ‘abnormal’. The influence of patriarchy would have been a primary reason to ‘conform’ or to ‘protect’. Added to that there Kerala population was blessed with plenty of opportunities when the Gulf boom opened up. So if you simply stay put and ‘conformed’ to the standards your distant uncle would take you to the Arab lands. In other words you would be taken care of.

This became all the more evident in our movie-land where movie after movie raised the feelings of deja-vu but were still welcomed. Heroes were meant to play their roles keeping in mind of their ‘image’. Cinema decayed itself to the point of promoting machoism and misogyny. Alarm bells went ringing when the likes of Shakeela started to be compete with the macho heroes. That turned out to be the curve for Malayalam Cinema.

It is not just in the acting department , which was dominated by monotony. My friend shared a few songs sung by someone and then I realized how our great singer, who is compared to Gandharva, is a boring singer sans any emotion. But he set a framework which countless others followed which derided us of any variation in the renditions.

Moving over from Cinema, most of the Malayalis were reluctant to admit their wealth or to flaunt it. It was considered cheapness or arrogance. We preferred smaller homes, cars and average-guy outfits. We preferred it in Bank Deposits or in acres of Land.

Moving closer to home it was rare to see Husband and Wife getting cosy Or a Brother showing his love for his sister. I remember the Church ‘Youth’ camps where the older couples had to be persuaded and cajoled to dance.

Back in my school days a guy and girl had no reason to talk to each other, unless they were lovers. Nevertheless walking together or a simple date would have been equivalent to sex.

Walking back to final years in college, when the multi nationals made sure you don’t have to go job hunting after college, a friend of mine wasn’t lucky enough to get a job. He packed his bags to Bangalore where he found someone from North to marry. It was a rare feat back then and he religiously started posting poems along with recipe of Dal Curry he made for his wife. We the old guys’ gang ridiculed him only to get ‘blocked’. But when the chronic Bachelor of the gang got married recently and started posting recipes of fish fry, I realized we had missed the bus.

What made us change? It is possibly the economic opportunity slowly drying up and we having to really cry out for the small blessings. Years ago we had this Manager in our organization who found particular enjoyment in making his friends email the Chairman of the organization about the ‘wonderful service’ he was rendering them. As per the protocol the Chairman’s office forwarded to the bosses commending the performance. The whole thing was a matter of joke back then. Today things have taken a U-turn with every other Branch Managers making a scripted video on how kind and loving they are. I even see people writing poems on each other as a part of well planned ‘I scratch your scrotum, you scratch my clitoris’

This change in economic reality reflected in our houses as well. We started having to tell our children and spouses how much we love them. I don’t remember a single birthday being celebrated in my childhood. Today forgetting a birthday is considered equivalent to unfaithfulness or lovelessness. I heard a lady worrying loudly on buying Gold jewellery for the birthday of the neighbour’s 3 year old daughter.

As we slowly climb down from the high branches, it is time we realize that people turning overnight stars in Youtube and Tik Tok isn’t the end of ages. It is just that the space have opened up for more people. We need to get out of the cages of insecurity and open ourselves to appreciate the variety around us.

Jonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02353132118227776294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097295319906609428.post-75681015415739561672020-04-25T06:00:00.000-07:002020-04-25T06:02:00.462-07:00Seeking validation

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">Around this time of last year, I dumped my only full sleeve shirt in the
dustbin. It was not torn or unusable. I had brought it the year before to wear
it at the annual promotion interviews. Last year was the second time I got
rejected. This year, when I missed the bus again for the third time I had
nothing left to throw off the drain. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">

perpetual state of existentialism and wait for the ‘greater good’ from the
heavens above. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">10 years ago as I joined this institution a senior person told me, ‘You
are not meant for this place.’ He didn’t mean to chide me but stated this as a
matter of fact. Every April as I wait for the selected list of promotees with a
pumping heart and browse down the list to find that my name has been left out
this year as well, the words of that man rings like an oracle. The small man as
I am, it leaves me with abject morbidity to see people below me, climb up the
ladder. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">Validation is all
that I have been yearning for, all my life. Right from parents to teachers,
classmates, friends, colleagues and the bosses. I yearn for those little
‘Congrats’ messages with emoticons of flowers and claps and thumbs up. But I am
not sure if to seek validation in a job you don’t like by people who hardly
like you is the redemption I wish for. I have boasted myself of being
‘different’ and ‘rebellious’. That might have been a way of seeking attention
but the world knows no greater stupidity. The system weeds out the ‘different’
and the ‘rebellious’. Those who claim to have climbed the ladder while being
‘different’ are no better than pimps for the system.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">One of my worst fears
has been of obscurity. That I will fade out of this world, unheard and unknown.
Perhaps that is why I have been yearning for the validation. The affable
Punjabi guy, who was roomed with me during a training program told me’ Either
you have to reach the top or don’t even bother.’

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">Perhaps its time I learn not to bother.<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">

Back in
2008 when I started blogging, I had promised myself to do 2 blogs a month. It
was crazy 2 years until I started working in a place that ate your brains in
lieu of salary. It has been crazy 10 years until the lockdown gave us a welcome
time to sit down at home and enjoy the sunset. There was this urge to get back
to writing along with reading. Then a long lost friend came in, who caressed my
thoughts and gave the kick that resulted in a writing spree. It is the feeling
when you are trapped in a endless black hole and someone comes into push you
out.

The Kerala
Government came up with campaign, which rightly named ‘Break-the-chain’. Over
the past few weeks, the humanity has seen many links of the chain being broken
and new links being built.

When the
boss announced the one day curfew on a Sunday, I felt a tug in the heart.
Although I have been emotionally detached from the Church for the last five
years, being forced to stay out on a Sunday and that too on the lent season can
be emotionally touchy. But then the lent season went off peacefully, so did the
Hosanna and the Easter. No one died of not celebrating the Holy communion. But
then it was high time the Churches modified its practice of celebrating the
‘communion’.

Everyone knew there was a communion of spittle, but since the
ritual was too holy to be modified no one really bothered. Now what common
sense couldn’t alter, the virus may. Infact religion has been creeping into
science, polity, arts, literature and every other aspect of human life. This
one, invisible virus may have broken (or atleast rattled) the chain.

People
started learning that the ceremonies, functions and festivals could be done
with minimal attendance and little ‘noise’. A few weeks ago the representatives
from nearby temple came to visit. The temple used to do a well-known festival
every year gathering thousands of people all over the state. This year they had
to drop the plans soon after making a hefty advance payment. The faithful were
no longer interested in making the donations and the usually-rich Temple Trust
ended up in huge debts.

Our big fat
weddings became small calorie-free ones. 5 years ago I struggled to match the
‘in-flow’ to the ‘out-flow’ during mine and ended it up at 10.00 lacs( average
wedding cost for a Trivandrum Christian). Today it has trebled the cost, with
most of the spending on materials you won’t be using ever in your life again.
It was beyond any logic to burn up the entire life savings and earning a debt
on a single day. Moving on the penchant for celebration increased with people
finding all sorts of excuse to eat poorly cooked food loaded with carcinogens.

As the
chains started shaking so did people’s confidence in immortality. From the time immemorial humans were after the
elixir of youth and immortality. A few generations ago it was difficult to
survive beyong 50s. Today people well live into their 80s, thanks to the modern
medicine and quality of lifestyle. When we temporarily stopped our weekly
football match a month back, guys as young as 30 went with a parting note, ‘See
you, if alive’. Even the youth couldn’t guarantee their lifespan. The reason
was the virus had a bad impact on people with respiratory and liver issues and
both of them are guaranteed in modern cities. Last week I saw my father, he was
pretty sure this pandemic was certainly from the Book of Revelations. People
has gone on to predict the end of the worlds.

If lifespan
was a worry, imagine the situation of people having to spend day in and out for
weeks with people who they can barely stand. Work life was a means to escape
from their own house for many. Now they have to spend their days in closed
rooms with people bound only by legal contract. The worst affected is women who
had to stand their in-laws. I have spoken to people who nearly hit the
depressive button. The first few days recipes from Youtube and other crafts
helped them trudge through. Then came different challenges with a hashtag and
quizzes. In a couple of weeks the fountain of creativity goes dry.

The idea of
capitalism and free market has taken a serious rattle thanks to the virus. Informal
labour sector has been India’s greatest blessing. The millions of unaccounted
and cheap labour oiling the giant wheels of Indian industry are not covered by
any security. The people greatly affected by them were from this sector. We
literally saw a huge human crises, which literally stared back at us and laid
bare the ‘Indian growth story’. Many millions have been literally pushed into
poverty during this lockdown and Government has no verifiable data for its
utility schemes to reach them. Moving up the ladder there are chances of
lay-offs in sectors catering to US and Europe. Salary revisions will be minimal
and many investments will sour.

We have also
learnt that free will associated with capitalism will not help the humanity
survive. Consumption has to be checked. We may have to minimize consumption and
let go of many luxuries. But again there are many who lived off the luxuries. I
haven’t seen the guy who irons my clothes and I wonder how he makes his living.
The supermarkets gave you a ‘sense of choice’ and literally put out so many
small traders out of business. The old Khirana shops have come back to
prominence as people have to wait for hours to get into a ‘supermarkets’

The coming
days we may have to adjust to the long queues, lesser human contact and common
gatherings. The human civilization has turned a curve
The reason why I say this is to give you an idea of timeline of growth of religious fundamentalism and my age. In fact I believe our generation was the gang who grew up with rise of religious fundamentalism.

My parents like million other Malayalis migrated to Gulf for making their dough. Dough was easy to churn out back then as there was no tax, no ‘hangouts to chill’ and good currency conversion. So if you had planned it well, you could retire peacefully and happily by the time you are in your mid 40s.

Apart from oil Gulf was also a fertile land for the Wahabi version of Islam. You could practice any religion, provided that was within authorized spaces and you didn’t get over enthusiastic about spreading the good news. Getting into a Arab jail was a nightmare as the legal support is almost nil and was expensive, if any.

In the same manner the Christian schools had chapels in their schools here, the schools had a place of worship for the Muslims. The Muslim kids would go for their namaz while we sat silently in class.

The Churches there were more ‘spirited’, thanks to the minority feeling. We had like 4 worship services every week and to be frank the Christian kids were more well versed in Bible than the ones in India. So from a very young age we had this deep rooted awareness of ‘the only true way’ to salvation. I was also torn in confusion by the Word which asked us to go out to the ends of the World and preach his good word.

And then one day, between the interval of one teacher going out and the next one coming in, I got into a argument with a Muslim friend of mine on ‘the real true God’ Another Christian friend joined in and the debate went on in loud decibels. Today I wouldn’t have indulged in such stupidity. But back then you were innocent, stupid and unmindful of the consequences.

That is when Mr. Rashid, the tall, lanky, dark and handsome Physics teacher (literally) jumped into his class. Mr Rashid was one of the favourites in the school for his characteristic wit and simple method of teaching. He didn’t fail to notice the noise and after the class settled down enquired what the matter was.

We told him the matter of argument. He sat down, lost deep in thought. We stood there expecting a lashing. Evn then I wouldn’t have mind it as it was for ‘his kingdom’.

Rashid asked the Muslim student what his idea was

“La Illaha il Allah” He condensed his all argument in a sentence

“What does that mean”

“There is no God but Allah”

“What does Allah mean”

“God”

“In other words, there is no God but God. God is not defined by religion”

With that simple words he amplified the scope of ‘God’ and those words still stays with me even after 20 odd years.

There was this another teacher, Mr Khalid, who developed an idea of starting business. He partnered with a friend and put all his life savings into wholesale trading of fruits and vegetables. He was a very nice and affable man with a broad smile which was as attractive as the cologne he wore. Unfortunately the partner cheated him of all his life savings and left off.

The school management was kind enough to let him join back. He was broken in mind. But the spirits never wavered. The guy seemed to have lost his mind and decided teaching God was much more essential than school curriculum. He started teaching us heaven and hell in his usual affable spirits and we kids enjoyed the class for the theatrics and the fact that we needn’t ‘learn’ them. He acted out how he will be carrying us into paradise in his own hands (roughly the way Hanuman carried the mountain).

Soon matters got out of hands. He started taking lectures on heaven and hell for hours altogether and wouldn’t let the other teachers get in after his hours. He then decided he ought to give us sex education and began lewd description of body organs (which we enjoyed ofcourse). The school management had to kick him out eventually.

Today I can’t help but wonder, if the roles have reversed in our society. Crazy men have gained more access to our space. Religion has encroached philosophy, literature, music and science. Spiritual gatherings are crowded when science halls are empty.
Jonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02353132118227776294noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097295319906609428.post-14091163097626982082020-04-11T17:35:00.001-07:002020-04-11T17:35:50.884-07:00ഓട്ടോ സവാരി
When the right and wrong is no longer black or white

The movie also showed how a innocent and innocuous young guy can be capable of violence and rape.

The director exhibited his capability in subtley and aesthetically telling a few things to the Malayali audience. Especially the plight of a youngster in his total sex illiteracy even though he was brought up in a family consisting of four sisters. There was also this minor, parallel plot of a father trying to 'secure' the future of his daughter by sending her off to nursing course.

I'm not plunging into any further post mortem on the technical or creative side of the movie except that it is a very good piece of work. But it will be unfair on my part of I don't mention a few things related to the ideology which I found to be slightly unscientific and regressive.

The protagonist is, rather happily, brought up in a religious and rigid social setup in a agrarian society where the rules are governed by the dictats of religious beliefs. The irony is even when he belongs to a close knit community, they fail to address his basic sexual insecurity when he confides it openly.

The incident, marital rape, which is center of the movie occurs in the same period when a 'family retreat' is being held at the church.

My problem is the path through which the director takes the issue from there on. The boldness in presenting such a subject gives way to religious dogma and rhetorism. How does a woman find solution in the very social setup that abuse her? Rather than a solution it is the normalization of abuse. Every religion survives by promoting patriarchal hegemony. Women are taught to 'adjust' (the normalized term for bearing torment).

Cinema, as a progressive medium, should not promote regressive ideology in any form.

The continuous supply of

Apparently she called up her colleague who was half a decade older than her. And she consoled her saying she was called a 'little girl' too.

(I am not sure why some women confide their worries in me. I don't bother to sound politically correct or protective) I wondered aloud- Why isn't he calling me a little boy!!!

Today mankind is standing at the fork road of history. In terms of progressiveness we have a chance to take a turn and it is left to us. I am talking this in terms of role of women in society and in the society I am in it is very much manifest in religion. It started from form of divorce in Islam to sexual exploitation by a Christian Bishop and now permitting women to enter a Hindu temple in kerala.
India as a society, for all these years, has cunningly dietified women to confine them in the confines of her home.

One greatest tool for gender discrimination is PATRONIZATION. It works better than physical or sexual abuse. It's a very common and accepted practice in our society. It starts off when you label your daughter as a princess and she'll carry the tag to her grave and die as a princess. All through this journey she's normalized to believe that she's weak, unclean, vulnerable and is destined to protect her beauty and chastity.

Workspaces are the trickiest space for a woman to be in. Ever since the liberalization the protective walls around the woman has gone down. She's in a free space to express herself but so does she have to resist and overcome the challenges of sexism and discrimination which are more pronounced. She has to fight from the same platform with men in an environment heavily favouring against the independent spirit.

The work environment today are largely asexual. The work , it's character and nature can be performed by any gender. In this common space sexuality is an invisible player and need not be explicitly expressed. Sexuality may be conveniently used for one's advantage.
Adopting powerful patrons is one such method to steady your ship in rocking water of the corporate world.

Legalizing patronization is akin to legalizing abuse. In the name of protectionism it is not right to curb the right of expression. The onus falls on the girl to protect her beauty and chastity. Haven't we seen the same argument raised as a counter narrative to grossest of rapes.

Jonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02353132118227776294noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4097295319906609428.post-53066525456234215782018-10-11T07:59:00.001-07:002018-10-21T00:57:12.049-07:00Movie review - വരത്തൻ
The first question I try to answer before reviewing a movie is why I chose the movie in the first place and in this case 'why this amongst a deluge of Malayalam releases after the real deluge'

A decade ago it took only 35 bucks to get a balcony ticket in Kerala and I have seen many from neighborhood States come over to watch movies. Probably the chairs wouldn't recline but still it was worth it.
Today you spend 10 times that amount for a movie and the only difference being you can recline back to sleep and forth if the movie gets too boring.

So choosing a lousy movie means waste of time, money and digesting the cheap pop corn. These days the paisa-vasool factor comes in first when I pick something. So in this case I hoped the big names in title-credits wouldn't disappoint. The popular reviews too had given a thumbs up with cliche phrases including- strong woman, survivor, abuse, patriarchial fascism etc. So I decided this was the one I will be burning my money on.

The movie is set in the picturesque, hilly locales of central travancore and based on the lives of a agrarian community. The community is largely portrayed as xenophobic, misogynist and largely machoistic. The movie touches on the issues the post-liberalization , middle class , urban generation of Kerala today can identify with.

There has been a generation shift in the way the movies are told today. When cinema shifted from indoors to the rustic countryside a bunch of story tellers brought up in a rural background told us their stories. As the movies shifted to cities the characters too shifted out, but thanks to the effect of Nehruvian socialism we still couldn't stop glorifying the rural India and all the old school morality and fidelity. We had a dark patch in the timeline of Malayalam cinema during the shift through the liberalization of 90s. Characters were reduced to caricatures and so were the shallow ethics.

The current lot of movie makers are more comfortable with their urban upbringing. The present movie reels off from Dubai, from the concrete jungles to picturesque locales of Kerala. The characters today are more comfortable and flexible in their ethics and doesn't mind fiddling with loose morality. If we do a careful study of the body of work of Amal Neerad, we can't help but notice that most of his subjects are based on issues faced by the upper middle class urban youth- ranging from religious radicalization, trafficking, substance abuse to greed and revenge. Even still, the director doesn't dive deeply on the subject and in the end a hero with grey character shades destroys the whole bunch of bad guys.

If you have a look at the present cinema, which I am trying to analyze, we can't miss the fact that the objects used in the movie to sketch the characters are largely inaccessible to the average middle class and are largely removed from their lives. In a larger context the average guy is reminded that he's still in the slums and has a large corner to turn.
Another observation of many reviewers that the movie is about the 'bold-woman' , is very curious. I found the movie is about a average ordinary-Joe transforming himself in to a super human avenger and that too without much logical reason. The problem I find here is reducing the bold-woman into a caricature who's clothed prettily and doesn't mind flaunting her curves. This is a larger problem in every other new age movie where the characters are reduced to caricatures and we can conclude that malayalam cinema hasn't wholly shaken off the demons yet.

The next problem I find is with the politics of the cinema. The young Malayalam film makers, to a larger extent, proudly don their left liberal cards on the lapel. In the present movie there were so ominous mentions on the popular right wing, patriarchal figures trying to curb the every day freedom. But unfortunately, again, there's no deep thought that has gone into the issues.
Even when the politics takes a left identity, we don't see much of class struggles in the theme. It's where the mainstream left politics of the country, unable to take a stand on neo liberalization is. They have said permanent good bye to class struggles and is more of socialist Democrats in nature.

We see a agrarian society which has lost its economic independence and hence the identity. They see their land and belief system being encroached by the monster which is fondly termed as global village. The film maker prefers sweeping the garbage under the carpet and then elaborate on the stench.
I sign off with a question if it is fair to sketch a whole community as misogynistic?

The film is said to be 'inspired' from a Hollywood flick. Another Amal Neeradh signature

Date with a fancy numbers? Or any day like the usual ones. For me this day, you threw the guillotine at whatever we had for the past few months.

I know all the beautiful things end fast and the sweet memories just fade away. I wanted it to last as long as it could. Probably I am very immature and unpractical. But it’s good to be stupid than mediocre.

The weekend you stopped talking to me I knew something was going wrong. The moment you told me not to join you for lunch and took the higher moral stand I knew everything was over. Romanticizing the past is good to the point you take refuge in the myths that never were. I remember the people you told me about, the ones you shut out completely from life. I wondered if it was my turn to be next.

You gave me a chance to be ‘normal’/’good’ friends. I never knew the meaning of it. I have had enough of the ‘good’ friends and I didn’t want another one. I would rather fade away with the sweet moments you gifted me rather than pretend nothing happened. I would treasure the first phone call, the car rides, holding hands, rides in elevators, the chocolates. Today those memories are mine and mine alone.

Everyday when you give that look that pierces in through me, it hurts me like nothing else. Soon I will go away and will fade off from your memories. Years later we will meet in a mall or restaurant. I wonder if you will recognize me.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
He remembered a question some had asked him once', 'Have you ever REALLY loved someone ...ever?'

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
The question had brought a smirk on his lips back then. But not any longer. For him, back then, love wasn't far from the loins and he didn't cry when they left him.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
Still love has been a undefined emotion for him. He was trying to name some deep enchanting emotion he had been feeling for the past few weeks. The college days were over a decade ago. Mid life crises was looming in the horizon. Any 'normal' people would term him crazy, when they giggled incessantly, stole secret glances, smiled broadly, feigned anger or jumped into empty elevator together.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
When did he realize he was in love? He had heard of someone moving into his office from Bangalore. He had hoped for someone stylish and single. What caught his eye was someone tall with broad shoulders glistening in sweat and salwar with back cut low. He had always been a fan of the blouses with open back. He sat there dreaming of the sweat when she turned up to show her buttoned nose and smile that lit up the entire universe. He didn't get much chance to break in and she was married and pregnant. She did catch him more than once staring shamelessly and must have thought what a jerk was he to stare at a pregnant woman.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
Soon she moved into another floor. Goodbyes were exchanged. The meeting would, from now on be, random and serendipitous bumping on in crowded canteen. Life went on until he got a call from an unlisted number. He hated picking unknown numbers to say it was the wrong number. He thought for a few seconds and made the decision that changed his outlook for love, forever.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
Although it was for a lost wallet, they became thick friends from that evening. Tea was planned, dark secrets and smiles were exchanged. He started wearing his best to office when she said one day that she liked his shirt. She came onto the secluded washroom area, when he said how much he missed her.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Default Sans Serif", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
But when did he realize he was in love. For him love attained a strange meaning when he felt himself burning with jealousy. She once told him about a guy who made her so special and the unforgettable night she spent with him. It took a few moments for him to feel himself burning with passion. He couldn't stand the fact that he was not the unforgettable person in her life. Will he be able to give her a atleast a minute she wouldn't forget. As the passion left him after a sleepless night and tears, just like the fire after consuming a dry forest, he realized he had to be her special man. Someone she would never forget. Someone she would tell her kids, when she grew old.

.Why Kashmir? Is a question everyone asked, when I told them
of my travel plans. Srinagar was not a safe option, with regular stone pelting,
covert operations and unfavorable weather on top of it. There are safe
‘tourist’ spots, where you can get a good time, depending on the size of your
wallet.

But then for me, the question to be answered was ‘Why do I
travel’ rather than the ‘Where’. I always hated to do the same things rest of
the population did. Mediocrity is my most feared enemy. I wanted to do things a
little differently. Moreover I wanted to know and talk to the people, treated
indifferently by rest of India.

The trip wasn’t very easy to do. Just hours before take-off
my friend suddenly remembered that pre-paid mobile connections doesn’t work in
Kashmir. That was a gentle warning of things to happen- One place where the ordinary man is denied
rights to access privileges enjoyed by rest of the country. The moment we
touched the airport at Amritsar, I heard someone talking about a possible
flight cancellation. There was a heavy rainfall in Srinagar accompanied by
snow. The pretty girl in the check-in counter seemed to have fallen in white
paint and seemed to be happy about it. I was quite worried about having to
return home without cutting a name off the bucket list. We waited at the
airport. I scanned the motley group and few of them were from the armed forces
(judging the physique), some of them were tourists (judging the luggage) and
some were traders.

The airport staff were not ready to give any assurance and
we waited on for a couple of hours. And suddenly out of nowhere we were rushed
into a flight and took off in no time. After 15 minutes of rumble and tumble we
touched down at Srinagar airport. From a temperature of 45 degrees we stepped
straight into temperatures touching zero.

Later on I started to realize how the image runs so parallel
to the life of a average Kashmiri. The biggest error Indian administration did
was proclaiming implicitly a national integration based on religion. And
further to it, hugely adorned but shallow ‘religious tolerance’, which is
nothing but depravity of choice.

I understood how far removed our concepts about the valley
are from the real situation. Sitting in the lush comfort of my office and
worrying about how to get back home without getting soaked, will not help me in
making fair judgment on a community for whom a heavy downpour can mean flooding
and lose of livelihood. If weather is worse, the state administration was even
worse. I had never seen such pathetically administered state capital and one
main reason being the power tussle between the army and democratically elected civilian
administration. This administrative failure is the very root cause for the ills
in the valley. The economic gap is so visible and prevalent. This in turn
reflects in different forms of life including lower standards of life, lesser
economic opportunities and separatism.

The people although friendly, view the mainland Indians as nothing
more than walking wallets. Any attempts to befriend them is met with certain
suspicion and wariness. The daily struggle to survive cannot be comprehended by
the tourist population. I had particularly noticed that the tourist crowd,
never stepped out of their comfort zone or strayed out of the ‘tourist’ path to
talk or interact with a Kashmiri. I did
also notice the strong inter link between the Kashmiris where they knit themselves to each other for better
possibility for survival.

Here when we talk about survival, we are talking about how a
small drizzle can turn itself into a flood or heavy snow, casting the crowds
into abject penury. While on a visit to the magnificent Mughal Gardens, I met a
famished guy who earned his living doing manual labour. He was telling me how
difficult it is to find regular job in the valley. His plight was echoed by
many.

The difficult living conditions and the insecurity results
in a closer bonding and tight knit structure to facilitate survival. My taxi
driver and guide was persuading me for the boat ride through Dal Lake. He said
it was a heavenly feeling. I said a firm no, considering the zero degree
temperatures. Finally when the sun shown through we got off in a boat. The boat
owner had quoted unbelievable rates, claiming he will show us around 8
points. As soon as we started handful of
merchant boats started circling around selling everything from flowers, fruits
and hot drinks. To my dismay, I found out that the 8 points were nothing nut 8
local shops. (I strongly dissuade anybody from doing a Dal Lake trip).

As I sat at the airport, brooding over the misfired trip,
two little mynahs flew around the waiting lobby hunting for food. They were
unmindful of the innumerable security checks or gun wielding military. They
flew around nonchalantly. Kashmir looked the same. Nonchalantly and unmindfully
struggling against Indian nationalistic obsession.
